Ropey Science is run by Ollie Thomas, a herpetologist, tree climber and rope access technician based in the UK. Through this and the recent launch of CanopyCam he has been, and hopes to continue, blending the worlds of ropes and science to push the frontier of research to new heights.
With certification to IRATA L3, CS38 tree climbing and aerial rescue, Rescue3 Specialist, and FREC3, along with a wealth of experience from rock climbing and advanced rigging, rescue and technique based courses, we can work within industry best practices as well as “rigging outside of the box” to achieve the desired goals.
Take a look at the Projects and Publications page to find out more about what we do and please get in touch if you have any questions or are interested to see how ropes can aid your research.
We have a wealth of experience teaching local researchers and guides safe techniques for accessing trees, in both Spanish and English. It’s important to empower local scientists to be able to undertake their own research and be able to access and enjoy the trees that surround them. We’ve trained eagle researchers, herpetologists, botanists and mammal
Ringing birds is one of the methods used to help us understand movements and migrations, as well as population trends for these animals. Undertaken by trained and licenced individuals, it’s most commonly done with a mist net to catch the birds. However, for larger species and more intelligent species, such as raptors, this method doesn’t

On this project the aim was to construct canopy bridges over the road, with scope to expand to the wider area in the future. The idea of these bridges is to increase canopy connectivity, allowing arboreal fauna to cross between disconnected
